Merion Estes at The Craft & Folk Art Museum – ends Jan. 9th

MERION ESTES:
UNNATURAL DISASTERS SEPTEMBER 30, 2018 – JANUARY 6, 2019

LOS ANGELES — The Craft & Folk Art Museum (CAFAM) presents Merion Estes: Unnatural Disasters, a twenty-year survey of the Los Angeles-based mixed media artist. Rooted in feminist art that grew out of her work with L.A.’s iconic Woman’s Building,Estes is notable for her involvement in the Pattern and Decoration movement of the 1970s and ‘80s. This solo presentation comprises twenty large-scale collaged paintings made with found fabrics, mixed paint applications, and photo transfers to create rich, colorful landscapes that are simultaneously beautiful and disturbing. Each work expresses deep environmental concerns including climate change, species extinction, pollution, and other natural and manmade disasters. A complement of smaller sculptures will accompa- ny the paintings. Merion Estes: Unnatural Disasters is on view from September 30, 2018 to January 6, 2019.

JURIED CRAFT EXHIBITION

October 20, 2018 – January 27, 2019

For over 90 years, the Delaware Art Museum has showcased contemporary craft in its temporary exhibitions by artists working locally and throughout the region. Capitalizing on the Museum’s popular annual exhibitions of drawings, prints, paintings, sculptures, and watercolors, the first juried Contemporary Crafts Show was formally established in 1958. Since then, a rich array of woodwork, ceramics, furniture, jewelry, textiles, metalwork, glass, enamel, and leather has been selected by jurors from museums and universities located throughout the United States. Selected by Haystack Mountain School of Crafts Director and juror Paul Sacaridiz, the 2018 Juried Craft Exhibition will celebrate this long history and one of the most vital modes of artistic production today.
